My Aunty has read eBooks for years and they are not exciting. What difference does EPUB3 make?

The book industry worked hard to create an excellent new standard in EPUB3. It is founded on standard HTML5 markup with CSS3 styling and XHTML structure and metadata. It makes provision for almost any kind of multimedia filetype and user interaction to be embedded in the text or by hosting semi-autonomous executable code modules (“widgets”). Very open external networking and interoperability is allowed in addition to secure digital rights management. Fixed, reflowable and even hybrid layouts are also supported in the specifications along with completely global support for every character set, right-to-left and vertical conventions.

This all adds up to, overall, potentially the most flexible and pervasive digital media container ever devised – including the webpage.

The fact that large publishing industry concerns have been relatively slow (until recently) to adopt their own standard has meant that although e-reader development has been very widely undertaken, only a few famous names are well-known today as highly developed and capable EPUB3 reader products. RePubIT is consulting with the Book Industry Study Group to better explain and demonstrate the capabilities of EPUB3.

Make sure you are acquainted with what a really great e-textbook or encyclopedia looks and sounds like today on a high spec OLED screen tablet. It can be sumptuous, but does the reader offer bookmarks, highlighting and annotations that turn into study aids and are shareable? We think they should and we know they can.

Now join us in asking these questions about EPUB3: Can the content teach itself to you, as well as be a reference? Does it let you get help just when you need it? Can it be improved if some of us are having difficulties? Can it give us more to think about if it’s too easy? If we actually do read all the extra examples and optional advanced content, will anyone know or care – or acknowledge me?
